Along with being Valentine’s Day, February 14th is also Ferris Wheel Day. The birthday of of George Washington Ferris (1859 –1896), the engineer who invented the Ferris wheel!
The Ferris wheel first appeared in 1893 in Chicago. Its huge wheel was 250 feet in diameter! It had 36 cars, each of which could hold 40 riders. It was a huge hit!
The largest Ferris wheel today is bigger (328 feet in diameter), but each of the 60 gondolas seats just 8 people. Compare the capacity of these two Ferris wheels.
Could everyone at Campbell School ride either of these two Ferris wheels at once? (Campbell School has 652 students.) How about Kennedy School? 337 kids How about both schools on a great field trip day! Looking forward to hearing from you. Mrs. Donohue’s mathematicians
